Aroma- warm, fresh sweet herbaceous, apple like scent
Chamomile is from the daisy family, the fresh blooms have a distinctive apple-like scent. The word chamomile is derived from Greek -chamos (ground) and melos (apple).
Ancient Egyptians dedicated chamomile to their gods for being a cure for the 'Ague' (acute fever); therefore the Latin word 'nobilis' is referring to a noble flower.
Both Roman and German varieties do share a range of attributes, but at a different percentage. Chamomile grows in Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and USA.
Chamazulene, a chemical molecule, comes from the family of azulenes. It gives German chamomile its blue color. It is produced during distillation of the flowers.
It has a potent anti-inflammatory activity, including many medicinal properties for the skin. It is present in Roman chamomile, but has less % concentration, so it does not give a blue color to the essential oil.
Contraindication- May cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Included in this family are chrysanthemums, dahlias, goldenrod, marigolds, ragweed, sneezeweed, sunflower, yarrow, zinnias, general daisies, asters, and others.
