Amyris belongs to the citrus family, its name derived from the Greek word amyron meaning “intensely scented”. The Amyris botanical tree was discovered only in 1886. Native fisherman and merchants call it “candlewood” because of its great oil content and common use as a torch, because it would burn for a long time. Amyris is used mostly in perfumery as a fixative and base note; aromatherapy is taking notice of this special slightly viscous essential oil and it is used for facial products and massage oil treatments. It can be used in a diffuser during meditation session. Grows in Jamaica, South and Central America, Haiti and Sri Lanka. As a side note, elemi essential oil (a type of balsam) exude (ooze) from the trunks of Amyris species.
